Alvah Laveryne Smith

Alvah Laveryne Smith was born on May 26, 1930, in Marlow, Oklahoma, to Joe S. and Vera Lee (McGaughy) Smith. He passed away on Tuesday, July 31, in Duncan, at the age of 88.

Family visitation is scheduled from 6:00-8:00 P.M. on Friday, August 3, at Whitt Funeral Home.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, August 4, at 11:00 A.M. in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Todd Davison, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Whitt Funeral Home.

Alvah was a 1948 Marlow High School graduate. He earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Central State College in Edmond when he graduated in 1951. He married Letha Faye Woods on August 15, 1952 in Sterling. They had two sons, Al and Keith.

He served in the 95th division of the Army Reserves for 16 years. While attending school, Alvah worked for Roy D. Goodner and Herb Jones in their grocery store. Following his college graduation, he taught one year of school in Sterling. Early in his business career, he did accounting work for Cecil Connor, Skelley, U.S. Post Office, and MCM Machine Works. He then operated his own business, C&Y Casing Pulling Company, for over 50 years. He owned a herd of Angus and Limousin cattle, enjoyed gardening flowers, collecting postage stamps and old coins. He was a member of the Stephens United Methodist Church.

Alvah is survived by his wife, Letha Faye Smith; children, Al and wife Bridgette Smith of Oklahoma City and Keith and wife Lynn Smith of Duncan; grandchildren, Alicia Smith, Jessica Gernandt, Nonie and wife Julie Myer, and Andrew and wife Brittany Smith; great grandchildren, Eric Gernandt and Lachlan Smith; and twin brother, Harvey Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Vera Lee Smith.

Alvah was always so good to Todd. He let him work on holidays and weekends after he went to college. Todd always enjoyed "rollin'' pipe for him all those years.
I enjoyed seeing him and hearing what story he had to tell. He was always a happy person,
