Arlene Ruth Cockrell, 96, a former long-time resident of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed peacefully on the evening of May 7, 2018, surrounded by family in Pearland, Texas.
Born June 24, 1921, in Providence, Rhode Island, she was the eldest daughter of three children blessed to the late Neale Orion Pierce and Ruth Victoria (O'Neil) Pierce.
Arlene proudly served her country during World War II in the U.S. Navy WAVES in Washington, D.C., in Communications. While visiting her sister, Esther, in Oklahoma, she met the love of her life, a Texas gentleman, Louis Rueben Cockrell. They wed on May 27, 1955, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and were blissfully married for 28 years until his death in 1983.
Arlene lived most of her adult life in Duncan, Oklahoma. As her children grew, she embraced working outside the home, first for the Lindley Clinic as a receptionist and transcriptionist, and eventually transitioning to Administrative Secretary at Duncan Regional Hospital. The last 15 years of her life have been enjoyed living with her loving daughter, LouAnn, and her family in Pearland, Texas. She often spoke fondly of her native New England always yearning for Lil' Rhody and the ocean. Arlene's legacy will be her persistently positive attitude, enthusiasm for life, and kind, gentle spirit.
Survivors include her children, Dr. Steven Neale Cockrell (Sandy) of Hannibal, Missouri, and LouAnn Schornick (Joe, Jr.) of Pearland, Texas; eight grandchildren, Jaclyn Taylor (Brandon), Joanne Whitley (Ryan), Alyson Schornick, Samantha and Scott Cockrell, Molly Shiller (Randy), LeeAnn Estrada (Pete), and Bubba Pope; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear sister, Esther Pierce Ryan of Winter Park, Florida, sister-in-law, Sally Holgate Pierce of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and ten nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her brother, Neale O. Pierce, Jr., and a daughter, Ellissa C. Pope.
A celebration of Arlene's life will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018, at 2:00 PM, in All Saints' Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Susan S. Lindley officiating.
