Lifetime Stephens County resident, Betty Elam, 81, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at her home in Duncan, Oklahoma Sunday, September 3, 2017.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, September 6th at 10:00 A.M. at the Duncan Cemetery with Ronnie Andrews and Robbie Harvey, great nephews of Betty officiating. Funeral services are under the care of Don Grantham Funeral Home. The family will visit with friends at Grantham Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m.
Betty was born to Leon and Ruth Bishop on July 18, 1936 in Comanche, OK. She attended Empire Public Schools where she graduated in 1954. Betty married the love of her life Jerry Elam, of Duncan, on January 23rd, 1954 in Wichita Falls, Texas. They were actively involved in local Square Dancing and Archery Clubs. They enjoyed vacationing to Colorado for many years as well as numerous trips with friend to Las Vegas, Nevada and Bossier City, Louisiana. Betty was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, crocheting, and ceramics. She also enjoyed playing the piano for family and friends. She was an avid bird lover/watcher and enjoyed collecting antique bird items. One of her favorite things was spending time with her grandchildren.
She was employed by the Business Center at Halliburton for 13 years. Previous to working at Halliburton she was a hairdresser and also worked for Main Street Jewelers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Ruth Bishop, and one sister, Loretta Newton.
She is survived by her husband Jerry Elam, two sons Gerald Elam of Hastings, Oklahoma and Sam Elam and wife Connie of Corum, Oklahoma; sister Bonnie Rothrock and husband George of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and three grandchildren, Colt Elam and wife Cassie of Corum, Oklahoma, Geralyn Epstein and husband David of Davie, Florida, and Katrina Hasanoglu and husband Nezih of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; four great grandchildren, Don and Rafael Epstein and Nezih and Cruz Hasanoglu; and numerous, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Pallbearers will be sons Sam Elam and Gerald Elam, grandson Colt Elam, nephews Keith Newton and Clendon Harvey, and close family friend Cole Bridges. Honorary Pallbearers will be close family friends Rick Pennington, Suzette Pennington, and Ray Hale.
The entire family would like to thank caregivers Suzette Pennington, Linda Newsome, Mary Taylor, and Dorothy Nunez. They would also like to thank the staff from Stepping Stones Rehabilitation in Marlow, Oklahoma and Chisholm Trail Hospice for all their help and support.
