Donald (Jiggs)'s Story
Lifetime Stephens County resident, Donald (Jiggs) Gunn Jr., 92, stepped into the presence of his Lord and Savior at Duncan Regional Hospital, Sunday evening, Aug. 27, 2017.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home, Duncan. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 5 - 7 p. m.
Gunn was born on his family's farm, 9 miles west on Refinery Road, March 21, 1925, to Dan and Minnie Gunn. He attended Fairland School through 8th grade, and then attended Empire School where he worked through school driving a school bus. He graduated in 1943 as Salutatorian of his senior class. Donald was awarded a scholarship to attend United States Military Academy at West Point but declined it to help his parents run the family farm.
He was a farmer and rancher most of his life, he was the owner and operator of Gunn Oil Company from 1971 to 1989. He worked for the ASCS Office for many years, measuring land in Stephens County and worked for the Waurika Rural Water District. He sold insurance for Oklahoma Farmers Union from 1965 to 1989.
He was a school board member of Empire School for 25 years. He was ordained as a deacon at Fair Baptist Church in 1964 where he served many years where he taught Sunday school and studied the Bible. At the time of his passing, he was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Knutson Gunn, his parents Donald "Dan" and Minnie, his brothers Raymond and Edward Gunn and Harold Weldon, and their spouses, a daughter, Donna Gunn Shipman, and a daughter-in-law, Glenda Mathis Gunn.
Survivors include his sons' Danny Gunn of North Carolina, Tommy Gunn of Texas, a daughter, Julie (Jerry) White of California; 7 grandchildren: Beverly (Randy) McAlister, Billy Don Shipman, Rusty (Megan) Gunn, Brande (Cody) Richardson, Don (Tiffany) Gunn, Taylor and Tyler White; 10 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren; a nephew, Jimmy Weldon (Kay), of Corum, nieces Barbara Weldon Fitkin of Oklahoma City, Carolyn Gunn of Lawton, and Janie Gunn Edelman of California.
Honorary pallbearers will be the grandsons of Donald Gunn. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Empire Schools ISD Athletics Department c/o Vicki Davison 276803 East 1760 Road Duncan, OK 73533
