Earl passed away on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 in Lawton, OK. The son of Peter and Leila Engelhardt, he was born on August 13, 1928 in New Berlin, WI. At the age of 16, during World War II, Earl joined the Merchant Marines and served in the North Atlantic. Just before his 18th birthday he joined the U.S. Army and spent most of his three year enlistment in Germany.
After returning home he completed high school, graduating from South Division High in Milwaukee, WI before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1950. While stationed at Sheppard AFB, TX Earl graduated from A & E School with honors, earning an instructor position at the school.
He met and married Florence O. Stepp on June 9, 1950. Three of five children, Stephen, Wade, and Diane were born before leaving Sheppard AFB in 1954 for Komaki Air Base in Japan. During their stay in Japan, son David was born. Other tours of duty included Selfridge AFB, MI, where daughter Donna was born, George AFB, CA, and ultimately back to Sheppard AFB where he retired from military service in 1969.
Throughout his career with the Air Force, Earl worked as an instructor and supervisor in the field of hydraulics and airplane maintenance, which included the Titan I and Titan II inter-continental missile programs. After retirement Earl moved his family to Arlington, TX and continued his instructor roll at Ling-Tempco Vaught and later at Chaparral Steel Company in Midlothian, TX. In December 1991 Earl retired from Chaparral Steel and moved to Beaver Point at Lake Waurika with wife, Florence. In May 2016 he moved to Duncan, OK where he lived until his death.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Florence, son Wade, 4 brothers, 4 sisters, daughter -in-law Geralyn Engelhardt, and great-grandson Jaxon Scott, and great-great granddaughter Kora Ryan.
Survivors include sons Stephen of Decatur, TX, David and wife Tommie, Wilson, OK; daughters Diane Ryan, Duncan, OK, Donna Cobb and husband Glenn, Waxahachie, TX; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, 1 brother and 1 sister, 3 sisters-in-law, and 3 brothers-in-law.
Pallbearers will be Thomas Ryan, Russell Engelhardt, Eric Engelhardt, Debra Engelhardt, Dillan Young, and Ethan Ryan. Honorary bearers will be Joseph Engelhardt and Jakob Frye,
Family visitation will be Thursday December 7, 2017 from 4:00-6:00 p.m.
Services will be held Dec. 8 at 2 p.m., at the Asphaltum Assembly of God Church north of Ringling with Dan Stewart officiating, internment will follow at the Dixie Cemetery with Military honors. Service are entrust of Comanche Funeral Home, of Comanche Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, Memphis, TN, or the a charity of their choice.
