Frederick (Rick)'s Story
Frederick (Rick) Miller Hinshaw, age 60, passed away on June 13, 2017 in Duncan, Oklahoma.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday June 16, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church with Randy Southerland officiating. Rick was born on Dec. 8, 1956, in Pensacola, Florida to Albert Edmund and Thala (Roberts) Hinshaw. The family moved to Cherry Point, North Carolina before settling in the Duncan and Comanche area. He attended Emerson Elementary before moving to Comanche where he graduated in 1975.
Rick devoted most of his life to the sport of wrestling. He began wrestling as a young boy with DAWC at Liberty School and later he, along with a few friends, asked Coach Patterson to be their wrestling coach and they began entering area tournaments as independents. This would help to create the wrestling program at Comanche, in which Rick would become a mentor and coach. Rick helped coach many young Stephens County wrestlers over the years and followed some of their careers into the collegiate level. He was also an avid fan of both OSU and OU wrestling, traveling to many of their championship matches with friends.
In high school, Rick played basketball one year because he was in speech class, but didn't want to travel to speech competitions so he tried out and made the varsity basketball team. He wasn't a basketball player before or after that.
Uncle Rick never had any children of his own and enjoyed being a big kid himself but he absolutely adored his niece and nephews as well as his great niece and great nephews.
He is survived by his sister, Beth Hinshaw Kurtz, and her husband, Bud, of Yukon, Oklahoma; his niece, Tara Harper of Duncan; his nephew, Dixon Harper and his wife, Jacobi, and children, Hannah, Blayden, and Isaac, of Duncan; his nephew Stuart Harper of Comanche; his cousin Scott Martin of Elko, Nevada and his little buddy, Carlos Hinshaw and a host of friends he considered family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Al and Thala Hinshaw, aunts Judith Ann Hinshaw Martin and Barbara Lee Hinshaw, grandparents Albert Frederick and Marian Stevens Burr Hinshaw, and Clint Miller and Marcella Jones Roberts, and cousin Dean Andrew Martin.
If you ask anyone who knew Rick, they would tell you he was a giver.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Gabriel's House, Comanche Wrestling, or Marlow Wrestling.
Services are under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home, Duncan.
