Geneva Hughes, a longtime resident of Stephens County, passed away early Monday morning, Nov. 14, 2016, in Duncan, Oklahoma. She was 96 years old. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 16 at the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-6 Tuesday and 9 until service time Wednesday. The family will receive friends 5-6 p.m. Tuesday.
Geneva was born July 17, 1920, at Loveland, Oklahoma to Walter A. and Lena Pearl (Sanders) Dempsey. She came to the Comanche area when she was a teenager, and has made her home here ever since. She was a charter member of Grace Freewill Baptist Church. Geneva enjoyed crocheting, sewing, making quilt tops, cooking, all arts and crafts. She loved writing poetry, and she even had a book of her poetry published.
Survivors include two children: James L Hughes, Comanche; and Gayleene Keenan, Comanche; one sister, Thelma Clegg, Comanche; a granddaughter, Candida Freeman; seven great-grandchildren: Michael Hughes, Addison Taylor, Dakota Hughes, Abriel Freeman, Aiden Freeman, Aizline Freeman, and Rome Freeman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Aaron Hughes; two sons: Dale Hughes and Aaron Ray Hughes; two brothers: Paul Dempsey and A.W. Dempsey; three sisters: Marie McMasters, Christine Dempsey, and Chloie Hughes; and one grandson, Shayne Hughes.
