Harold Eugene "Gene" Bonds, 89, of Duncan, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017, in Duncan.
Family visitation will be Wednesday, March 29, from 6-7 p.m. at Whitt Funeral Home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 30, in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tracy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Duncan Cemetery.
Gene was born Dec. 18, 1927, in Duke to William Robert and Pearl Beatice (Alexander) Bonds. He was raised on a farm and worked at his dad's feed store in Duke. He graduated from Duke High School. In high school he played in every sport he could but, at 97 pounds, he found his place in the boxing ring. He was a feather-weight champion, losing only one match, in Chillicothe, Texas.
He married the love of his life, Gwendolyn June Rolston, on June 17, 1950. They had five children, James Michael, Danny, Steve, Donna, and Robert. She preceded him in death on November 3, 2006.
Gene was employed as a wholesale delivery person in the dairy industry. He began his dairy career with Carnation in Amarillo, then at Steffens in Alston, Borden's in California, and finally back in Duncan for Meadow Gold.
He enjoyed watching football, especially the Dallas Cowboys. He also enjoyed playing golf and fishing.
Survivors include his children, Danny and wife Linda Bonds of Duncan, Steve Bonds of Oklahoma City, Donna June Bonds-Martinez of Conway, Arkansas, and Robert Bonds of Duncan; eight grandchildren, Shannon Bonds, David and wife Rachel Bonds, Chad Bonds, Kristina Bonds, Rebecca and husband Eric Powell, Matt and wife Sydney Martinez, Brandon Bonds, and Brittany Bonds; two step-grandchildren, Chad Abshire and Chris and wife Missy Abshire; eight great-grandchildren, Tiffani McEntire, Morgan Bonds, Kyla Bonds, Keelin Bonds, Alyssa Bonds, Hayley Bonds, Austin Benedict, Cameron Powell and Colten Powell; and one sister, Billie Marie and husband Ron Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James Michael Bonds; and his brother, LaWayne Bonds.
