Hattie's Story

Hattie Simpson Burnaugh, 93, of Duncan, Oklahoma went peacefully to her Heavenly Home on Sunday December 31, 2017.

Services will be 10:00AM Friday January 5, 2018 at the Don Grantham Funeral Chapel with Gary Thurman officiating. Services are under the direction of the Don Grantham Funeral Home.

Interment will be 2:00PM Friday January 5 at the Fairlawn Cemetery in Snyder, Oklahoma.

Hattie Terry was born August 14, 1924 to Paul and Bessie McCurdy Terry on a farm near Roosevelt, Oklahoma. Hattie grew up on a farm with her four brothers and two sisters. Hattie graduated from Roosevelt High school in 1942. She played softball, basketball, ran track and was active in drama.

Hattie married her high school sweetheart Carl Simpson in May of 1944. They lived on the farm until Carl went into the U.S. Army to serve during WWII. After his return from service in the military they established a home in Snyder, Oklahoma where Hattie worked as a telephone operator. Hattie and Carl raised two children in the home, son Terry Simpson and a daughter Tammy Simpson Graham.

Hattie's faith in Jesus Christ was evident to anyone who knew her. She was very active in the First Baptist Church of Snyder for many years. She was also very active in school booster clubs and following and supporting her children's activities.

Hattie remained in Snyder after Carl's death in 1976. She worked as First Baptist Church secretary until she married Laverne Haining of Oklahoma City. They remained in Snyder and were married for eight and a half years before Laverne's sudden passing.

Several years later Hattie met and married Wayne Burnaugh of Walters, Oklahoma on May 25, 1990. They established a home in Duncan, Oklahoma where they were both active members of Immanuel Baptist Church. Hattie and Wayne enjoyed traveling and camping in their motor home. They made many friends during their travels and caught a lot of fish.

Hattie enjoyed people and really liked making others laugh. She especially liked pulling jokes on family members and close friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Paul M. Terry and Bessie McCurdy Terry; four Brothers, Cliff Terry, Ed Terry, Kenneth Terry, and P.M. Terry and two sisters, Loretta Lawrence and Ruby Butler.

Hattie is survived by her husband Wayne Burnaugh of Duncan; her children, Terry Simpson and wife Vicki of Edmond, Oklahoma, Tammy Graham of Duncan, Oklahoma and Greg Burnaugh of Walters , Oklahoma. Grandchildren Mandy Carpenter and husband Brian of Clovis, New Mexico, Taryn Palesano and husband T.J. of Marysville, Ohio, Keenan Graham and wife Lacey of Guthrie, Oklahoma, Kris Graham of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Krisa Bryant and husband Mike of Edmond, Oklahoma and Steve Walker and wife Kiersten of Edmond, Oklahoma. Hattie is also survived by twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
