Jan Sparkman was born Jannegke Pruiksma on Oct. 3, 1931 to Oene Pruiksma and Etke Sikkes Pruiskma in Workum, Friesland, in the Netherlands. The family name Pruiskma means woodmaker. She was raised in Workum, Friesland, where she was one of 11 children. Jan's standing in the family was between an older and a younger brother. She was often caught up in her brother's mischief. She was a very athletic girl, ice skating through the canals of their city, even winning races and medals. She also was a runner and won medals for that. She still has her tolle painted skates and the wooden shoes from Holland which she continued to wear at home while doing housework.
Jan came to the United States in 1955 staying with family members. She met and married Buster Euel Sparkman in 1956. She attended English classes and learned English and became a U.S. Citizen in 1956, very proudly. She and her husband lived in Mahweh, New Jersey. Buster passed away 20 years ago.
Jan and Buster have two daughters: Kathy Oppenheimer who lives in Johnsville, New York, and Donna Hampshar, who lives in Duncan, Oklahoma. Jan has four grandchildren, Rob,Daniel and Cindy in New York State and Michael who lives in Washington state.
Jan has two sisters who are still living in the Netherlands.
Later in life Buster and Jan lived in Madison, Virginia, and attended the Presbyterian Church there. Her ashes will be interred there along with Buster's at a later date.
