Janis Ellen Calmes passed peacefully to eternal rest November 14, 2017. Janis was born May 12, 1937 in Marlow, OK, to Kermit Whitfield Calmes and Inez (Martin) Calmes. She was the granddaughter of Effie Ellen Wyers, an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, and Robert Lee Calmes, Sr., from Kentucky; and Edward Lindsey Martin and Rose Ettie (Elledge) Martin who were Pioneer Oklahoma Settlers that Homesteaded in Oklahoma Indian Territory (Present day Stephens County) during the "1890's Great Land Rush".
Janis grew up in Duncan, OK where she graduated from Duncan High School. She graduated from University of Oklahoma, Class of 1959, with a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Geology. She continued her studies at the University of New Mexico, served in the Peace Corp in Brazil and was later employed by Hanson Oil Company, Roswell, New Mexico, as a Field Geologist. Following the death of her father, she joined the family business, Calmes Investments, Duncan, OK. Later she owned and operated a dress shop for several years in Santa Fe, NM before retiring to Rockport, TX. She moved to Salisbury, MD in 2012 to be near her sister Carole Calmes Brence.
She resided in Wicomico Nursing Home from 2012 until her death.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her sister, Carole Calmes Brence, and husband W.A. Brence of Salisbury, MD. She is also survived by two nephews and their families; Kermit Whitefield Brence, his wife, Linda, and their daughters, Alexis and Ashley Brence, of Pearland, TX; William Alexander Brence, his wife Vickie, and their son, Dillon Brence, of Stafford, VA.
A graveside Memorial Service will be held at a later date at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery, Duncan, OK. Her sister, Carole Calmes Brence, CLM, will lead the service.
