LaMarylis Whisenant, 89, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday Feb. 9, 2017, in Oklahoma City. She was looking forward to having her 90th birthday in August.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, at the Don Grantham Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tracy L. Wilson officiating. A private graveside will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
LaMarylis was born to William and Zella Alberta (Bertie) Ray on Aug. 13, 1927, outside of Duncan, Oklahoma. She was named Miss Duncan in 1943.
She married Joe Bill Whisenant Sr. on June 18, 1945, in Walters, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joe Bill Whisenant; a son and daughter-in-law, Joe Bill Jr. (Jody) and Paula Whisenant; her parents; three brothers, Jack, Dee and W.L. Ray; and her sister, Louise Dempsey.
After marrying Joe Bill they started their family a year later and LaMarylis spent the next 10 or so years raising her children: Jody, Toni, Bruce and Monty. After her youngest Monty was in school she went to beauty school and started a 50 year profession as a hair dresser. She was 75 when she finally gave up her beauty shop. They also owned and operated Panther Drive Inn in the 1960's.
LaMarylis was an active member of First Christian Church in Duncan for many years and recently joined West Side Christian Church.
LaMarylis is survived by her daughter and husband, Toni and Rick Rogers and sons and wives, Bruce and Rhonda Whisenant and Monty and Amy Whisenant; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
