Duncan, Oklahoma - Charles Elmer Hanson, 76, of Duncan, passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born Jan. 21, 1949, to Melvin and Ida Lee (Mathews) Hanson. Charles was raised by his mother and stepfather, Jesse Terral, who helped shaped the hardworking man he became.
Charles proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Following his time in the military, he worked many years as a truck driver, a career that reflected both his strong work ethic and independent spirit.
Outside of work, Charles found joy in the outdoors. He especially loved fishing with his grandsons and treasured the time spent watching his great-grandchildren at play. A tinkerer at heart, he enjoyed working on cars and could often be found outdoors, tending to projects.
He was preceded in death by his father; mother; stepfather; brothers: Gene Hanson, Lloyd Hanson, Dave Hanson; sister: Shirley Allen; and great-granddaughter Patricia Davis.
Charles is survived by his wife of 31 years Karen Sue (Leverett) Hanson; children: Tammy Sue Akers and husband Brian, Sandy Renee Fowler and husband Russell, Jackie Dean Souther and wife Angie Souther; grandchildren: Danny Souther, Jerry Souther, Meghan Souther, Nick Fowler, Chris Fowler, Bobbie Fowler, Hilary Akers, Wesley Akers; and 16 great-grandchildren: Floyd Emmit Martin, Jackie Paul Martin, Jimmy Dewayne Amerde, Brightyn Ray Souther, Lucas Fowler, Carson Fowler, Blake Fowler, Dani Fowler, Osmo Fowler, Issac Fowler, Raylen Fowler, Luke Fowler, Abigail Fowler, Ella Fowler, Onyx Payes, Ezekial Fowler; and sister, Rita Sampley.
Visitation is planned for 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Whitt Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Whitt Funeral Home with Chaplain Kristopher Denning officiating. Interment will take place at 1 p.m. in Fort Sill National Cemetery with Danny Souther, Jerry Souther, Nick Fowler, Chris Fowler, Lucas Fowler, Wesley Akers, Ken Allen, and Terrell Henderson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Carson Fowler and Isaac Fowler.
