Duncan - David Burns, 86, was born Oct. 9, 1938, to J K and Jewell Burns on the family farm north of Lawton, Oklahoma and was taken to Heaven July 12, 2025, while living in Duncan, Oklahoma.
David attended Empire Public School for 12 years. After high school, he began his bachelor's degree in accounting at Cameron University and finished at Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma.
David married his wife of almost 68 years, Winna Mae Smith, Aug. 11, 1957. They met at 4-H roundup where he told one of his friends he was going to marry her someday.
His children are Ron Burns of Duncan, Oklahoma and Tammie Burns Lowe of Enid. His grandson Jay Brandon Burns, wife Alex and great-grandchildren Hallie and Saige Burns live in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His granddaughter Jinna McCown husband Garrett and great-grandchildren Jaylynn and Kamden McCown, live in Enid, Oklahoma. His grandson Kyle Hausher lives in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. His nephew Bobby Jay Burns and wife Debbie live in Duncan, Oklahoma. His niece Susan Thornton and husband Russell live in Duncan, Oklahoma. He has many great nieces and great nephews.
David was preceded in death by father J K Burns, mother Jewell Burns, brother Bobby Gene Burns, other family and many life-long friends.
David was a third-generation farmer raising limousine cattle, goats and sheep as well as being a hay producer. He also had a construction company for many years building Farmers Home houses and apartment complexes.
David was a long-time member of Fair Baptist Church. He loved riding his 4-wheeler, watching his calves being born each spring, talking about his cattle, looking at the stars on a clear night, enjoying game nights with his kids and grandkids (everyone wanted to be his partner at Pitch), setting trotlines and eating anything with gravy on it.
A celebration of life service will take place at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 16 at Whitt Funeral Home in Duncan with Bobby J. Burns officiating. The service will be streamed live from Whitt Funeral Home's website. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens with Ron Burns, Jay Brandon Burns, Garrett McCown, Bobby Jay Burns, Russell Thornton, Boyd Montgomery, Jim Billups, and Mike Turner serving as pallbearers.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Baptist Home for Girls, 13976 Anthony Lane, Madill, OK 73446.
There will be a visitation with the family from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the funeral home.
