Comanche, Oklahoma - Joe B. Newton was born Sept. 26, 1936, in Rush Springs, Oklahoma to George "Buster" Washington and Betty Pearl (Morton) Newton. He completed his earthly journey at his home near Comanche, Oklahoma Friday, Jan. 16, 2026, at the age of 89.
Viewing will be at Whitt Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 21-22. Funeral services are planned for 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2026, in the Whitt Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Southerland, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church West, officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Chris Miller, Don Phillips and Seth Hakanson. Interment will follow at Comanche's Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Whitt Funeral Home.
Joe graduated with the Empire High School Class of 1954. He completed his education at Oklahoma State University Tech in Okmulgee. He was a member of the Oklahoma National Guard. Joe was employed by Halliburton Energy Services, where he was an inspector and x-ray technician for the metallurgy department for 35 years. He loved to read and tinker with multiple projects, and he had a unique file system. He loved his 3-legged dog, Charlie. But he especially loved his family.
He married Marilyn Shelton June 30, 1967, in Duncan. Together he and Marilyn raised their daughter, Robin.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilyn; daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Chris Miller, of Decatur, Texas; and granddaughter, Avery Miller-Hakanson and husband Seth, of Decatur, Texas. He is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law: Val Ray and Darla Newton, Gary and Frances Newton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Newton.
