Johnanna Jones McLaughlin passed peacefully at home April 4, 2025. She was born in Arkansas City, KS to John Winston and Vertie Jones, September 13, 1933. She grew up in Duncan, OK, where she met her husband Charles, who preceded her in death.
Johnanna had a powerful singing voice at an early age, and studied two years at East Central University in Ada, OK, then continued her studies with a vocal music teacher at Oklahoma Women's University in Chickasha becoming an opera-trained soprano. She also had an interest in art and was skilled in graphic design, which made her a favorite draftsperson at Halliburton—where she met Charles—in the 1950s and worked there through the 1970s. She gained her Bachelor of Art at the University of Science and Art of Oklahoma, formerly TWU, in Chickasha in 1974.
She and Charles took to traveling the country and overseas to various places where opera and art were a major draw for them. After visiting Northern NM for many years to study art and enjoy the opera season, she and Charles ultimately moved to Santa Fe to live full-time in 1983. They were dedicated patrons of the Santa Fe Opera and Santa Fe Pro Musica, and were also active members of Church of the Holy Faith for several years, where Johnanna sang in the choir.
Johnanna is survived by her daughter Melody Maurine McLaughlin of Richardson, TX, and her sister Janice Lynn Naghavian of Oklahoma City, OK. She also leaves behind her dear friend Frances Martinez, who worked for the McLaughlins for 35 years and is considered family. Johnanna was fortunate to have devoted caregivers who loved her like a grandmother in the last eight years of her life.
