Duncan - Mary Ellen Monica Smith was born June 12, 1928, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to John Michael and Mary (Quitko) Shivetts. She finished her earthly journey Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, at the age of 97, at her home in Duncan, Oklahoma.

While attending George Washington University Medical School, she met Dr. Casper Hayden Smith Jr. on a blind date that would blossom into a lifelong partnership. They were married May 30, 1953, in Latrobe, beginning a beautiful chapter together. The couple moved to Oklahoma City, where Casper completed his medical residency, and eventually settled in Duncan, Oklahoma, where Dr. Smith established his practice.

Mary Ellen was very active in the Medical Association of Duncan and hosted beautiful buffet dinners in their home which Mary Ellen had prepared for their monthly meetings. She was also a member of the Women's Medical Auxiliary.

A gifted and passionate artist, whose mastery of oils, pastels, watercolors and textured palette knife brought vivid life to her canvases, Mary Ellen's work was celebrated in galleries across Texas and New Mexico, where her love for the Southwest's natural beauty shone through. A devoted nature enthusiast, she found joy in flower gardening and cherished the companionship of her beloved pets. Her heart belonged to New Mexico — its mountain vistas, wildlife and rich cultural heritage. She delighted in visiting art galleries and shops featuring handcrafted works by Native American artisans, often enjoying leisurely lunches in Taos or on the Santa Fe Plaza. Mary Ellen also nurtured a lifelong love of reading, finding peace and inspiration in the pages of a good book. Above all, she treasured time spent with her family, especially during visits to the places she held dear.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Dr. Casper Hayden Smith Jr.; and son Mark King Smith.

She is survived by her daughter Lynn Ellen Smith; grandchildren: Christopher Smith, Emily Smith, Stuart Hunter Smith (Taylor); great-grandchildren: Malachi, Michael, Aaron, Magnolia "Maggie," Maxwell; and best friend Winnie Biffle.

Services are being planned for a later date. Cremation arrangements are being handled by Whitt Funeral Home/Oakcrest Cremation Center.
