Roy Jesse Shorter Obituary

Roy Jesse Shorter, 86, of Duncan, Oklahoma, went home to be with his Savior and Lord on Sunday, July 3, 2016.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016, at Bethel Assembly of God Church with Pastor Ron Meador and Pastor Kraig Shorter officiating. Interment will follow at the Duncan Cemetery; arrangements are under the family care of Carter-Smart Funeral Home.

Visitation for family and friends will be from 6-8 p.m. July 6, 2016 at the Carter-Smart Funeral Home.

Roy was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Duncan, to Jess and Ruby (Brooks) Shorter. He attended Empire Schools where he played baseball.

He married the love of his life Betty Jean Callaway at the old Banner Assembly of God, on Sept. 21, 1949. He and Betty celebrated 62 years of exemplary marriage to all who knew them. Betty preceded him in death Jan. 20, 2012.

As a young man, Roy worked for Byerly Rodgers Automotive dealership in Duncan. His profession was a hard working carpenter who framed houses and built cabinets, later doing his own contract work. He also enjoyed raising some cattle. After retirement, garage sales and auctions became his hobby.

Roy was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church where he had served as a deacon and in earlier years at Banner Assembly of God, he led anointed praise and worship at both churches, sang solos and duets with Betty playing his acoustic guitar. His passion was southern gospel music. He and Betty enjoyed attending gospel concerts. Since Oct. 1, 2015, Roy continued to sing while a resident at Elk Crossing.

Roy was a loving husband, father and grandfather, he was a man of God, known for his integrity, compassion and steadfast faith.

Roy is survived by his two children, his daughter, Ruthie Jean Chasteen and her husband Terry, his son, Michael Roy Shorter and his wife Cheryl, all of Duncan; four grandsons, Eric Chasteen and his wife Brigett, Chad Chasteen, all of Duncan, Kraig Shorter and his wife Kayla, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Caleb Shorter and his wife Rachel, of Brookshire, Texas. Six great-grandchildren, Jackson Shorter, Lyla Shorter and Shelby Shorter, all of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Bodie Lane, Zach Lane, all of Duncan, Lindsey Lane Glenn and her husband Landon, of Hobart, Oklahoma, and one great-Shorter grandbaby on the way of Brookshire, Texas. A loving sister, Clairece Hutto and her husband Alton; brother-in-law, Kenneth Brooks, all of Duncan; sister-in-law, Carolyn Shorter, of Lewisville, Texas; sister-in-law Betty Callaway; brother-in-law V.J. Callaway, all of Hobbs, New Mexico, a special cousin, Gayle Cook, of Duncan and many nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Marion Shorter, Wayne Shorter and David Shorter and two sisters, Jewell Dessinger and Delores Brooks.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons and nephews.
